Decisions

Congrats, you were accepted!

Now it comes down to making a decision. Here are some important factors to consider.

Location & Lifestyle

Location & Lifestyle

Location & Lifestyle

You could work anywhere in the world

  • PhD stipends tend to be about the same throughout the country, so cost of living is something to strongly consider if you have chosen to pursue a doctorate.
  • For those choosing to pursue a master’s, you will want to consider how you will afford tuition as well as basic life necessities

Bookshelves and decisions

  • Take inventory of your interests and career goals and see how much they align with the program’s offerings.
  • Feel free to reach out to program administrators to clarify any questions or concerns you have.

Collaboration and cooperation

  • Look for programs that offer internship opportunities, academic support, network outlets and career services. Talking with current graduate students and/or alumni are a great way to get a sense of this.
  • Try to get a sense of professional development opportunities, especially those that will help you to grow your professional network.

Reputation

Research

  •  A strong professional network will be helpful for post-graduate opportunities.
  • Rankings in various publications are often based upon self-reported data and, as such, may not be entirely reliable. Some less biased metrics include: national funding levels (NIH, NSF, etc.), publications of faculty and students (frequency, quality, redactions etc.), number of graduates,  average time to graduation and job placements.
  • Informational interviews with current students, alumni and/or faculty.
